About LexSelect

We turn complex legal documents
into data AI can trust

LexSelect transforms PDFs, scans, and emails into structured, context-rich data that supports legal work, enterprise workflows, and AI-powered applications.
How it started

Like many good companies, this one started with a complaint

Scott Foster, an IP litigator and partner at Lewis Silkin, was prepping for trial one night when he hit a wall. He was spending hour after hour copying text from transcripts and PDFs, reformatting each excerpt to match his Word documents, and manually building citations. Across a full trial that work could balloon to 50 hours: difficult to bill, easy to write off, and always at risk of a wrong page number slipping through. He mentioned it to Jack Newton, founder and CEO of Clio. Jack immediately saw the problem was massive and solvable, and brought in Morgan Maguire, a lawyer by training with 15 years building legaltech products, to build it.
‍
In the summer of 2023, the three of them started building LexSelect. The first product was a Microsoft Word add-in that automated the copy-paste-and-cite workflow. What had taken 50 hours now took 4.
What we learned building it

The tool wasn't the hard part

Building the Word add-in taught them something. The citation workflow was solvable. But to do anything useful with a legal document, you first had to make it readable, and every tool in the stack was failing at that, flattening documents into text and discarding the structure that gives them meaning: hierarchy, defined terms, cross-references that only make sense in context of the whole.
‍
That same failure, multiplied across billions of pages, was the constraint underneath every serious AI deployment in legal. Not model quality. Input quality. The more autonomous AI becomes, the more essential the data layer beneath it is. So they followed the problem to its root and built the layer.

Three things we believe about working with documents

1
AI is only as good as what you feed it
A capable model can produce a plausible answer from a messy document — by inferring structure on the fly, a little differently each time, with nothing you can check. The quality ceiling for any AI system is set upstream, at the document layer, before a model ever sees the content.
2
Structure is what makes a document mean something
A contract isn't a stream of words. It's a hierarchy of defined terms, cross-references, obligations, and exceptions that only make sense in context. When you flatten that into plain text, you don't lose formatting — you lose meaning. Every downstream system that relies on that document pays the price.
3
Trust has to be traceable
In legal, finance, and compliance, "the AI said so" isn't good enough. Every output needs to link back to exactly where in the source document it came from — not as a nice-to-have, but as a hard requirement. If you can't verify it, you can't rely on it at scale.
Our mission

We're building the structured data layer for enterprise AI, starting with legal, where the problem is hardest and the need to get it right is highest.

A team that's been inside the problem

LexSelect is built by lawyers, legaltech operators, and engineers who came to this problem from inside it, as practitioners, as product builders, and as people who've spent years working with complex documents.
‍
Over the next two years, the focus is on embedding our parsing engine into the ecosystems where legal documents already live (practice management platforms, eDiscovery tools, enterprise workflows), and making it callable directly from the foundation model platforms where AI work happens.

The longer vision: every enterprise has the same input problem. Legal is the hardest version. Prove the architecture here and it carries everywhere documents feed the systems businesses depend on.
